Is An Air Conditioner Tune-Up Necessary?

As temperatures rise throughout the spring and summer, people tend to spend more time outdoors, playing, entertaining and relaxing. However, once things really start to heat up, nothing compares to heading back inside to the air conditioned comfort of your home. Keeping your AC in top condition is the best way to ensure you’ll have cool air when you need it, and is best accomplished with an annual air conditioner tune-up.

AC Maintenance Checklist

Spring is the best time to schedule your air conditioner tune-up, before you first turn it on. In addition to preventing damage from parts that may be worn or in need of cleaning, spring is also the time when contractors are less busy, making it easier to book an appointment time that works for you. Here’s what to expect:

  • Refrigerant level check. Levels above or below the required amount can reduce efficiency, and increase energy bills. A high reading is likely due to an overfill at the time of installation, but a shortage can be indicative of a leak, requiring further investigation.
  • Adjust and clean the blower parts. This exercise helps to improve airflow, thereby increasing comfort and efficiency.
  • Lubrication is applied. Moving parts require lubrication to operate smoothly and without friction.
  • System control check. A run through of startup, operation, and shut down of the AC unit is performed, to ensure safe and precise operation.
  • Coil cleaning. Evaporator and condenser coils need to be clean to function properly.
  • Cabinet inspection. The interior of the cabinet should be checked and cleaned, removing any buildup of leaves or other debris.
  • Inspect the fan. Motor and blades should be examined for signs of wear or damage, and repaired or replaced as needed.
  • Inspect the drain. A restricted or plugged drain opening can cause increased humidity levels, water damage, and mold growth.
  • Electrical check. All connections should be inspected and tightened as needed, to reduce wear and tear and ensure safe operation,

Lend A Hand

Once your AC tune-up is complete, there are some additional steps you can take throughout cooling season to ensure continued operation, and keep cooling costs low.

  • Change your air filter. Inspect and change your air filter every four to six weeks as needed, to ensure continuous airflow, and reduce wear and tear on parts.
  • Keep it clean. Trim the area around the outdoor unit, leaving a minimum two foot clearance on all sides, and five foot clearance above to allow for airflow.
  • Reduce the load. Give your AC a break by setting temperatures higher for times you are asleep or away, and closing curtains during the day to prevent heat gain.

Reap The Rewards

There are a number of significant benefits to regular air conditioner tune-ups, including:

  • Increased lifespan. A clean, well maintained AC lasts longer, and costs less to operate than one that is dirty and neglected.
  • Greater efficiency. Continuous, uninterrupted airflow, parts that are well lubricated and maintained, and an absence of dirt and debris help your AC to operate at peak performance, increasing its efficiency, while reducing the amount you spend on energy.
  • Uninterrupted service. Avoid a mid-season breakdown by having your equipment inspected before you even turn it on. An AC tune-up can help identify small issues before they become big, providing you peace of mind, and a steady flow of cool air.
