Home Rewiring Services in Northern VA

Rewiring your home isn’t something you think about every day, and it is not something you will often do. As such, it is often easy to miss the signs that your home needs rewiring.

Often, our clients will complain about flickering lights, loss of power, or tripped breakers. While these can occur with increased demand from high-draw appliances, they are often caused by damaged or outdated wiring. In fact, the more frequently they occur, the more likely it’s because the wiring is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Ungrounded outlets are another common problem in the area. These were phased out a long time ago and are no longer code compliant. However, most homeowners have not replaced their old outlets. While this may not seem like an immediate problem, the reality is they are not compatible with many newer appliances and cannot deliver the reliable power supply modern electronics require.

In some cases, you may notice a buzzing or humming sound emanating from your outlets. You may also see discoloration or smell burning plastic or rubber. These are critical warning signs that you should not ignore. These signs indicate a critically compromised electrical system and an imminent risk of an electrical fire. If you catch a whiff of ozone, delaying repairs can result in the loss of your home and potentially severe injuries to you or your family.

Risks of Not Rewiring Your Home

Fires and electrocution are the greatest hazards you will face if you fail to rewire your home. Wires are not like fine wine; they will not get better with age. As the insulation wears out or the wires become damaged, they will become brittle and break.

This damage can result in electrical energy release into insulation, wood, and other flammable materials. This can result in sudden and uncontrollable fires that can spread quickly and without warning throughout your home.

Failing to rewire your home can also cause electrical surges that can destroy sensitive (and expensive!) electronics. Rewiring your home protects the structure, your electronics, and your family from harm. It also ensures that you remain compliant with area building codes and your homeowners insurance policy requirements.

The Rewiring Process

Rewiring a home is done in multiple stages. The first stage requires removing the existing cables, wires, mounting boxes, and circuits, then replacing them with modern alternatives. Once in position, faceplates, light switches, fixtures, etc., can be connected to the new wiring system.

The rewiring process requires extensive work; thus, most homes take between five and 10 days to complete. This allows our contractors sufficient time to ensure the wires are properly removed efficiently and cost-effectively. It also allows us sufficient time to test and check every connection.

During the rewiring process, it’s best to vacate the home. This minimizes inconvenience and makes it easier for our electricians to quickly and efficiently perform the required tasks.

Prior to starting work, our team will provide you with a detailed breakdown of the tasks we need to perform and the estimated time for completion. As a general estimate, it can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 to rewire a small house, with the cost rising to $20,000 or more for a large home. While it may seem like a costly endeavor, it’s far less expensive than replacing an entire home or worse.
