How to Test for AC Refrigerant Leaks

If you live in Fairfax, Arlington, Centreville, Reston, or a nearby area in Northern VA, you know how important it is to have a fully working air conditioning unit during the hot summer months. One of the most common AC problems your unit may encounter at some point is a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks are very common, and they can wreak havoc on your expensive AC system if they go undetected. How can you tell if your unit has this problem?

Detecting AC Refrigerant Leaks

These are some of the methods to test for Freon leaks:
UV Light Test

You can test for Freon leaks using a UV light source. The refrigerant in your air conditioner has an oil lubricant mixed in. When the oil lubricant leaks out, it radiates UV light. To conduct this test, shade the area to be tested and shine a UV light source on it—if fluorescent marks appear, it means the unit is leaking Freon. In this case, your best bet is to call us for professional.
Fluorescent Dye Test

To perform the fluorescent dye test, you’ll need to purchase a fluorescent dye UV detection system. To carry out the test, you’ll need to inject a certain amount of dye (as per the instructions) into the refrigerant and allow the system to run. Goggles should be provided as part of the detection system. Put the goggles on and thoroughly examine your AC system with a fluorescent light. The goggles will allow you to spot any Freon leak.
Pressure Test

One of the best tests to detect a Freon leak is the pressure test, which can only be carried out by a licensed AC technician. In this test, the refrigerant tube is filled with nitrogen, the system is pressurized, and the technician monitors for a drop in pressure over a period of several hours. If the pressure begins to rise, it means there is a leak in the system.

Remember that that there is an excellent air conditioner tax credit current available for the purchase and installation of an efficient unit. Call us or contact us online today to learn more. We are ready to solve any and all of your AC problems—including refrigerant leaks.
