Fixing Excessive Gas Furnace Noise

Are you dealing with excessive gas furnace noise? Squealing and squeaking noises coming from your furnace can become a real pain, and you don’t want to have to deal with this throughout the winter months. Here at John Nugent & Sons, we’re experts at gas furnace troubleshooting in Arlington, Centreville, Reston and all throughout Northern Virginia. We can walk you through what you should do to correct this problem pertaining to gas furnace noise.

If your furnace happens to be whistling, it’s most likely due to a dirty filter. A dirty, clogged filter can cause the fan to suck air from anywhere it can, producing excessive gas furnace noise. Simply change or replace the filter, depending on the type of filter installed in your unit. If you have a reusable filter, use a hose or the sink to rinse away the dust, dirt and other particles. Allow the filter to dry before inserting it back into your furnace. If you have a disposable filter, write down the filter’s size before throwing it away. Buy a new filter of the same size and insert it into your furnace.

If your unit continues to whistle and produce excessive gas furnace noise, the problem may be due to gaps in the ductwork. Furnace gaps are caused by sheet metal joints that don’t fit tightly together. This is actually a common occurrence in modern furnaces. You should seal smaller gaps in your furnace with regular silicone caulk and larger gaps with a foam type sealant, which, when sprayed into a gap, expands as it dries and seals larger gaps that silicone caulk cannot. Finally, you should seal all gaps with an aluminum foil duct tape to fix the problem of excessive gas furnace noise.

Virtually anyone can fix the irritating problem of excessive gas furnace noise if it’s due to a dirty filter or gaps in the duct. However, gas furnace noise can also be caused by a faulty or damaged motor, which requires the assistance of a licensed technician. Please contact us if your furnace continues to produce too much noise even after you’ve followed these steps.
