Is Your Heating System Ready for Fall?

The worst time for your heating system to malfunction is the middle of winter, but with a little preventative maintenance, you can easily avoid a frustrating (and expensive) problem later this year. As summer ends and the weather starts to cool off, now is the best time to prepare your HVAC system for fall. We’ve put together some tips to get you started.

To learn more about getting your heating system ready for a new season, contact John Nugent & Sons at 703-291-1926.

Change your filters
If the filters in your furnace or heat pump are dirty, your system has to work harder to heat your home. This reduces your energy efficiency and raises your utility bills while putting unnecessary stress on your system. Changing your filters now can save you a lot of trouble in the future.

Check for air leaks
Take a look at your windows and doors, and replace any worn or damaged weather stripping that you find. You can also seal leaky ductwork in your attic or basement with duct tape, but if your ductwork has extensive damage, you should contact a professional.

Clear the area around your outdoor equipment
Inspect the area around the outside components of your system and clear any weeds or debris that you find. You can also check for any damage to the unit — if you see anything unusual, call an expert to help.

Replace the batteries in your alarms and detectors
The U.S. Fire Administration recommends that you change the batteries seasonally and replace the entire unit every 10 years to ensure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors will protect you and your family when you need it. If you’re not sure how old your detectors are, there’s usually a sticker with a manufacturing date somewhere on the device.

Schedule an HVAC inspection
There are a lot of things you can do yourself to prepare your HVAC system for fall, but a seasonal inspection and tune-up by a licensed professional is the best way to ensure your system operates at optimum efficiency. Regular maintenance is convenient and affordable with one of John Nugent & Sons’ cost effective maintenance plans.
