What Is a Dedicated Circuit?

A dedicated circuit is a circuit that you set aside for a specific appliance, usually one that requires more power. A dedicated circuit uses its own individual circuit breaker on your electrical panel so if it trips it doesn’t interrupt other appliances or circuits in your home. Dedicated circuits ensure that major appliances do not overload your electrical system which can cause blown fuses or tripped breakers. Certain medium to heavy-duty appliances may require a dedicated circuit. There are a few different types of circuits you can get, each varying on the number of amperes (unit of electrical current.)

  • 20-amp circuits are useful for mid-range appliances, like hair dryers and toasters.
  • 30 to 50-amp circuits are required for heavy appliances like electric ranges, dryers, etc. These breakers typically offer “double pole” protection to prevent the circuit from drawing too much power and starting an electrical fire.

Appliances that Require Dedicated Circuits

Did you know that the National Electric Code requires that large appliances, such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, or space heaters, be on dedicated circuits so they can operate safely without overloading your system?

If you are unsure whether or not your appliances are on the right circuits, one of our certified electricians can help to determine that. However, here is a list of common home appliances that we dedicate specials circuits for:

  • Electric ranges
  • Wall ovens
  • Refrigerators
  • Microwaves
  • Freezers
  • Dishwashers
  • Garbage disposals
  • Toasters
  • Washers
  • Dryers
  • Space heaters
  • Heating and air conditioning units
  • Furnaces
  • Water heaters
  • Garage door openers
  • Sump pumps
  • Water pumps
  • Central vacuums
  • Whirlpools/Jacuzzis/hot tubs/saunas
  • Blow dryers
  • Areas such as bathrooms, kitchen counters, and garages

Why Call a Professional for Dedicated Circuitry?

Installing dedicated circuits doesn’t guarantee safety—if your appliance is inaccurately wired to a dedicated circuit with incorrect wire size and insufficient amperage, the appliance could get overheated—possibly resulting in an electrical fire! Because of this, we recommend hiring an experienced electrical company for your appliance wiring and dedicated circuitry needs.

Dedicated Circuit Installation in Northern VA

Dedicated circuits protect your appliances, your family, and your home. Appliances without a dedicated circuit may draw more current than the circuit can handle, tripping breakers, blowing fuses, and overheating wire insulation, causing breakdown, and electrical fires. Appliances that are wired to a dedicated circuit with incorrect wire size and insufficient amperage for their needs may overheat and catch fire. Trust the professional electricians at John Nugent & Sons to ensure your appliances are wired safely and correctly.
