Sump Pump Testing and Repair
Your sump pump is a submersible pump typically located in the basement of your home. During a large rainstorm or snow melt, drain lines will direct water to the pump, which will flush it out so it doesn’t flood your basement.
Sump pumps are designed to last a long time, but like anything else, they should be periodically tested—you don’t want to wait until the storm of the century before you find out yours isn’t working! Fortunately, testing a sump pump is pretty simple.
How to Test Your Sump Pump
- Find out where your pump is located (it should be in a pit in the lower level of your home).
- Pour about five gallons of water into the pit. The pump should kick on in a matter of seconds and flush the water away.
- While you’re doing this, look around the pump area for things like leaves, balls, and other debris that could fall into the pit and clog the pump. Remove anything you find.
- If your sump pump activates after you fill it with water, this means it should work just fine.
- Check it again every few months just to make sure it’s working well.
If your sump pump fails to activate, call John Nugent & Sons right away!
